The Pilgrim's ProgressI looked then after Christian, to see him go up the hill, where I percieved he fell from running to going, and from going to clambering upon his knees, because of the steepness of the place.

The Beggining of the End

"The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord" Job, i. 21

"All things are in the hands of God, have Him for their
Author, are directed and governed by Him to such ends
as are most suitable to His wise providence.

Whoever murmurs at the course of the world, murmurs
at God who governs the course of the world."

(William Law)

___________________________________________________________________

This has been an eventful week in more than one way.  The primary subject on my mind at this time has been my little church in the woods.  As you remember the budget for the church was nearly gone when I got there and all the new additions (hymnals, sunday school curriculum, library, drapes, furnishings, fragrant candles, audio library, floral arangements, weekly cakes and cookies etc.) I brought in were a product of outside support from friends and generous people in Garland and White Rock.

Unfortunately, even managing to not touch the church budget the entire time I've been there hasn't prevented it from dwindling down even further. Local squirels have "vandalized" our heater twice, we now have a leaky pipe in the bathroom, a window was broken this week (it broke from the inside of the building while it was closed and locked and items inside the old church have a habit of moving or disapearing completely) and parts of the exterior regularly manage to fall off from the winds and shifting dry soil.

Much to my dismay, the pastor of our sponsoring church met with me and said they were cutting off our funding in April, which will result in the closing of our doors after 120 years in the White Rock Community.  I asked if he could give  my church more than $100 a month until we had enough people to sustain the budget more adequately but the church declined.  I'll be contacting the local association and the state convention tommorow in hopes of getting enough funding to sustain the budget till we can get our strength up.  Considering there was only 2 people there when I was called and we've grown to five I see potential, but I'm not sure if that will make a difference.  Keep White Rock in your prayers, 3 of our 5 have been out of church for a long time and I worry about what will happen if we close our doors.  I've really grown attached to them these past 8 months.

I was a bit numb after the first hour after hearing it, but I've now got that feeling in the pit of my stomach.  Still I managed well.  No show of emotion whatsoever, dad would be proud!  I'm a bit nervous about unemployment as well.  Between my car payments, health insurance, seminary and such things, I dread the down time.  I've had to work odd jobs and seasonal labor to make ends meat as it is.  Don't forget to pray for me too!

I'll be announcing the pending closure this Sunday before the congregation.  Many of them grew up in this church or have had as much as three generations faithfully involved.

Two and a half months remain.  We'll see what Providence provides.

His will be done,

C.H.B.

Heath,

I know that you know this...but Providence has always seen us through before.  It will not cease now.
I'm sure that if God wills it, there are unspoken ways of staying afloat.  The least of my worries is your finances...I know that you'll get by and that God will amply provide.  But what of this church?  Its legacy surely does not end here?  If the heart of the people is stirred at all by this horrible news, I see no reason they should not rally?  But will their heart be stirred?  I do not know your congregation.  What of meeting in someone's home for a while, then raising funds to reopen the building?

Its funny...your situation first brought to mind the church here in Thornaby.  The reason American interims were brought in initially was the impending closing of the church do to lack of funds.  It would be a shame to see this very thing happen on American soil!

I volunteer Christine and I to put on a benefit concert to keep the church open!  If there is time!
Seriously, Heath...God will provide, some way or another...if He wants to see this church open!!

Praying for you,
Amy

Thanks Ya'll,

I certainly do look at it from the providential perspective and if the closure does happen I will definately be using a text with a providential theme.  Nevertheless, I hate to see an old church shut down.  Especialy one with people as sweet and generous as ours.  Our "Business" oriented Southern Baptist environment tends to lead to this in rural areas though.  No church wants to invest in a "Money Pit."  It happens frequently, although few hear about it.  Dallas has a number facing closure as we speak.

As we speak I'm contacting the SBTC to see if there are any funds we might get for a while.  I think our sponsoring church, which made the decision for closure, has pretty much set it's mind on this since before I came.  They told me we had enough in our church funds to last 2 years, but it dwindled away in 7 months!  Apparently the high cost of utilities, aging heater, and crumbling building has gotten the nest of us.  Even with the $100 dollars we recieve from our sponsoring church, we have a loss of 300 every month from expenses.

I'm currently pulling some strings back here in Dallas to try and postpone the closure or possibly find a more able sponsoring church.  I've got two months and I'm gonna work till I know for sure that closure must hapen.

Heath

p.s. - I'd love for ya'll to sing sometime.  I imagine it would be in the papers.

God sovereignly does that which he pleases, and all God does, He does well. Rather it be allowing a church to stay open, or rather it be allowing a church to close it's doors. It is God and God alone who provides each penny, nickel, dime, quarter, or dollar. So if God would be pleased to sustain your church financially, then I know He can do that, it's not something that He is unable to do. His hands are not tied, but his hands are free. If it be God's will that White Rock Community might close, or if it be God's will that White Rock Community might remain open - God will get the glory either way. On this note, I want to let you know that there will be some Saints of God here in the Longview area lifting up our prayers for you and your church during this week. May your Sufficiency this week and every week be found in Christ alone, by His precious Spirit, for the glory of the Father, Amen.

Providence comes from the prayers of the saints. There is power in prayer. Keep praying. Encourage your people to pray. Friends to pray. Strangers to pray. His will be done.

Providence.  Yes, I posted two quotes on that matter at the beggining. (Job and Willaim Law) I am fully resigned to God's good pleasure, but I also seek His pleasure in me.  I am laboring to be a good stuard with what He has given me and that generally requires an effort to keep that which He has entrusted to me. I think it will be a learning experience for me and perhaps a much needed wake up call for the congregation.  Indifference is not the prescription.

In my own finances I still trust God, but the unknown can still be intimidating. (Fear and trembling if you will.)  I am fully confident He will provide and I look forward in faith to see how He will do it.

I have already gained some potential support from my comrades in Garland and the Hunt association meets with me in Rockwall tommorow to consider the next step.  Continue to pray.  It appears there might be a possibility that God has seen fit to provide another avenue for funding that is actually a better situation.

Grace and Peace,

C.H.B.

Thanks for the encouragement.  I just need to hear a little sanity from an outside source every now and then, in this insane place!

I mailed you something :)

Iamrightandyouarewrong,

Gosh that's a long name to type out!  I'm pretty much focusing all of my time on seminary (Church History and Hebrew was all I could afford this semester at $579 for text books for those two only!) and preparing for church.  Hebrew is killing me, but I'm still liking the learning process.  I'm ahving to break in a new prof right now and she's just not learning the habits I'm trying to instill in her yet!

I still spend some time hanging out, as you've noticed since I've been to your house a couple of times!  Still not found a second job but I'm not looking that hard anymore either!

Thanks for Asking,

Heath
